Get to know the GPT and MBR partitions on the Hard Drive
Difference Between GPT and MBR on a Hard Drive in PC Laptop
The hardware or component used as a place to store various files up to the System Operation Installation is the Hard Drive. It must be on all Laptop Computers, because Harddisk plays an important role in managing various existing files such as Game-Software, Documents, Photos, Videos, and various other files. The hard drive is in other laptops because it is included in a very important component. Without a hard drive, the system operation cannot be used, of course the computers cannot run.
Capacity on the hard drive can be divided into several partitions, the goal is that you can separate the place of the System or Personal files so that they have their own space. Do not mix Personal files with the System, otherwise it will confuse you but will also affect the performance of the Laptop-Computer. Partitions are also useful for those who use more than one operating system on the same computer, because only one partition cannot load two operating systems. And what is not less important, is that the partition will make the access speed to storage media better because it has been partitioned into smaller sizes.
After we create the partition, then the next is to determine the system format of the media. Examples are the FAT32 format for Flashdisk, NTFS for Windows drives, HFS + for Mac, and ext4 for Linux. After that, we can save data in the media. Primary is the main partition of the storage media and in the old partition table it can usually only load up to 4 main partitions. Extended is a partition that wraps logical partitions, its position is equivalent to a primary partition, the old partition table will usually be divided into 3 main partitions and 1 extended partition. This extended partition is used if we need more than 4 partitions, because an extended partition can be divided into several logical partitions.
Understanding GPT Partitions
GPT or abbreviation of GUID Partition Table is a standard form of layout for partition tables. As the name implies, this partition table uses a GUID or Global Unique Identifiers, which are 128 bit numbers used to identify information contained in a computer system. Although it is part of UEFI mode, the GPT partition table is also used for some BIOS systems. This is due to the limitations of the MBR partition table which only uses 32 bits to store logical addresses and size information on a traditional 512-byte disk, while the GPT partition table allocates 64 bits to store these logical addresses.
Information about the location and size of partitions will be stored in an area called the partition table. The operating system will read this area first before continuing to other areas. We mentioned earlier about the old partition table which only contains 4 main partitions. The table is the MBR or Master Boot Record that has been used since the 80s. But unfortunately this table can only support up to 2TB of storage, even though in the current era there are certainly many who need more storage than that. Therefore there is a GPT partition table that replaces the role of the MBR.
Almost all operating systems from computers currently support this GPT partition table. Some of them like MacOS and Microsoft Windows x86 support the boot process using GPT partition tables only on systems that use EFI firmware. But some other operating systems such as FreeBSD and Linux can boot using GPT partition tables from systems that use EFI systems or system BIOS.
Difference between GPT and MBR Partitions
This GPT partition appears to replace the MBR partition table which has several limitations. The most obvious is that the MBR partition table can only provide a maximum of 4 primary partitions and can only manage storage media up to 2 TB in size.
The MBR partition can only create 4 primary partitions, the GPT partition can create up to 128 primary partitions. The development of technology certainly makes more data and information need to be stored so that the MBR partition table provided is certainly not enough anymore. The emergence of the GPT partition table is considered to answer this problem because it presents up to 128 primary partitions and has no limit on the size of the storage media that can be managed, more precisely up to 9.4 ZB (Zettabyte). Thus the limitation of 4 primary partitions is no longer valid on this GPT, we can at will regulate how many primary, extended and logical partitions we want.
Besides that the MBR partition is very dependent on the first sector, because all information about partitions is there. If this sector is damaged or corrupt, the disk will not work and we will lose access to data. But this will not happen in the GPT partition table because duplication of the information is done, so if the first sector is damaged then there are duplicate results that will make the disk still work properly.
The only disadvantage of GPT is probably the OS that supports it. Some of the OSes mentioned above like Linux do support GPT. But for Windows it can only boot through an UEFI-based system and has a 64-bit version. While the MBR partition table can be used for all operating systems, both old and modern. Thus we need to pay attention to the specifications of our operating system before deciding which partition table to use.
Before doing the partition you need to know between GPT or MBR, it aims to not choose the Partition wrong. And adjust to what you need.
